Courts has been a landmark in Samabula, Suva since 1971, where it built its first 23,000sqft building after acquiring four blocks of land in 1967. Courts' first flagship store opened in February 1971 and Courts was the first company in Fiji to offer products on hire purchase. This allowed people with less disposable income to raise their standard of living. Whilst initially importing all merchandise, the company under the direction of its first Managing Director, Ron Elphick, soon encouraged manufacturers in Fiji to produce furniture locally. In many instances expertise, design and even funding were provided, which led to the success of some very well known furniture manufacturers who are big names today.
