Courts plc (“Courts plc” or the “Company”) is an international specialist retailer of electrical and home-furnishing products, trading in countries where market leadership is maintained through its scale and support provided by a competitive credit proposition.  Sales are complemented by extended warranty and credit protection insurance products, which are highly profitable. Courts trades from 280 stores in 19 countries, employing more than 7,000 people.  Sales in the year to 31 March 2005 were over US$720m.
Courts operate in markets where it has typically been able to establish leading positions. These markets are generally characterised by a relatively early stage of economic development where alternative sources of consumer finance available to Courts’ core credit customers are limited, while consumer aspirations are increasingly demanding a good mix of quality products and a high level of customer service. 
Courts’ overseas businesses operate in four geographic areas:

  • Caribbean
  • South East Asia
  • Pacific
  • Indian Ocean

Courts Fiji operations is owned by Vision Group Limited from 31 May 2006 and as at from this date has no financial relationship with Courts Plc.

Courts founded in Canterbury, England, by William Henry Court

1945

Courts sold to the Cohen brothers who began to expand the business

1946

Courts introduced hire purchase terms

1959

First overseas Courts store opened in Kingston, Jamaica

1959

Courts listed on London Stock Exchange. By this stage Courts had 34 retail stores in the UK

1965

Courts opened first store in Barbados and diversified product range to include electricals

1969

Courts Jamaica listed on local stock exchange

1971

Courts entry into the Pacific Ocean (Fiji) and Singapore

1978
